Day 28 – Prep to harden spline

Took the old spline from the forklift to school to do a hardness test on it.

It rated around 50-55 Rockwell C. Our spline is made of 1020C steel, and  even with through hardening it can only reach around 40 Rockwell C. If we opt for the case hardening option, we can get to about 50+ Rockwell C. Not sure if we’re going to – is it actually necessary or not. Sure it’d be worth it… But we are lazy…  Hack jobs always work anyways… right?
